Anandamayi Ma — The Bliss-Permeated Mother
Of all the women saints of modern India, none shines more luminously than Anandamayi Ma — the “Bliss-Permeated Mother.” To be in her presence was, by every account, to stand near a being who lived perpetually in the joy of God, untouched by the world even as she moved freely within it. She is revered by her devotees as a living incarnation of the Divine Mother herself.
A life always free
She was born Nirmala Sundari on 30 April 1896 in the village of Kheora in East Bengal, to a devout Brahmin family. Even as a child she was different — often lost in states of absorption, radiating a quiet, unshakable joy. She received no formal spiritual training and took no human guru; her realisation appeared to be simply her natural condition. In time her devotees gave her the name Anandamayi Ma — “the Mother permeated with bliss” — for the divine joy that never left her.
Asked once about her life, she gave an answer that has echoed ever since:
“My consciousness has never associated itself with this temporary body. Before I came on this earth, I was the same. As a little girl, I was the same. I grew into womanhood, but still I was the same… and ever afterward, though the dance of creation change around me in the hall of eternity, I shall be the same.”
She spent her life travelling across India, drawing seekers of every kind, and left her body on 27 August 1982, revered across the subcontinent as one of its greatest saints.
“Father, you have come!” — her meeting with Yogananda

It was largely through Paramahansa Yogananda that her light reached the West. When Yogananda met her in 1936, she greeted him with sudden, radiant recognition — “Father, you have come!” — and the two great souls wept together in the joy of God. Yogananda devoted an entire chapter of his Autobiography of a Yogi to her, “The Bengali ‘Joy-Permeated’ Mother,” writing that though he had met many men of God-realisation, he had never before encountered so exalted a woman saint.
Yogiraj Gurunath Siddhanath in her presence
Within our own lineage, Yogiraj Gurunath Siddhanath has spoken with deep reverence of his own meetings with Anandamayi Ma and the grace he received in her company. He places her among the rare, fully realised avataric beings, and has reflected on her — alongside Yogananda and Mahavatar Babaji — in his teaching on the spiritual hierarchy of God-realised masters. For Gurunath, her life is living proof that the Divine Mother takes form in every age to uplift sincere souls.
Her teaching
Anandamayi Ma gave no single doctrine; like a mother, she met each devotee where they stood, encouraging some toward devotion, others toward meditation, all toward the remembrance of God. Her counsel was gentle and direct: keep the company of the holy, give time each day to God, and let the longing for the Divine grow until it consumes everything else. Her presence remains, for countless seekers, a doorway into the joy that is our own deepest nature.
