The Yugas and Spiritual Awakening
The Hindu cosmology describes time as cyclical, composed of vast ages known as Yugas. Understanding these cycles provides profound insight into the spiritual opportunities and challenges of our present era, and reveals why…
The Four Yugas
A complete cycle of Yugas (known as a Mahayuga) spans approximately 4.32 million years. Each Yuga represents a progressive decline in virtue, lifespan, and spiritual awareness, followed by a renewal:
Satya Yuga — The Golden Age
The age of truth, virtue, and spiritual perfection. Human lifespan is 100,000 years. Meditation is the natural state of being, and the Divine is directly perceived by all.
Treta Yuga — The Silver Age
Virtue declines by one quarter. Ritual worship becomes necessary as direct perception weakens. Human lifespan is 10,000 years. The great avatars Rama and Parashurama incarnated in this age.
Dvapara Yuga — The Bronze Age
Virtue is at half strength. Temple worship and elaborate rituals are required. Human lifespan is 1,000 years. Lord Krishna incarnated at the end of this age to deliver the Bhagavad Gita.
Kali Yuga — The Iron Age
The present age. Virtue is at one quarter strength. Spiritual practice is difficult, distractions are overwhelming, and the human lifespan is merely 100 years. Yet even in this dark age, the path to liberation remains open.
Spiritual Awakening in Kali Yuga
Paradoxically, Kali Yuga offers unique spiritual opportunities. The scriptures teach that liberation, which required lifetimes of effort in earlier ages, can now be attained in a single lifetime through sincere practice. The darkness of the age makes the light of spiritual practice shine all the brighter.
Kriya Yoga for Kali Yuga
Kriya Yoga is the supreme practice for this age. It is direct, powerful, and efficient. It does not require elaborate rituals, long lifespans, or ideal conditions. It can be practiced by anyone, anywhere, at any time. This is why the masters have made Kriya available to the world at this critical juncture in history.
The Ascending Cycle
According to Sri Yukteswar's chronology in The Holy Science, we are currently in an ascending Dvapara Yuga — an age of growing spiritual awareness and scientific understanding. This perspective offers hope: the darkness of Kali is behind us, and the light of higher ages is dawning. Kriya Yoga is the vehicle of this awakening.
The Invitation
Regardless of which chronology one follows, the message is the same: the time for spiritual practice is now. The masters have given us the tools. The path is open. The only question is whether we will walk it.
