Wings to Freedom

The journey of the soul from bondage to liberation — the white swan of consciousness ascending through the Cave of Brahma to the infinite light.

One of the most beautiful visions in the Kriya Yoga tradition is the image of the soul as a white swan — the hamsa — gradually unfolding its wings and ascending from the waters of worldly limitation into the infinite sky of spiritual freedom. This is not merely a metaphor. It is a precise description of what happens when the Kundalini energy is awakened through Kriya practice and begins its ascent through the spinal centres toward the crown.

The Hamsa — The Swan of the Soul

The word hamsa means “swan” — but not an ordinary swan. In Indian symbolism, the hamsa is a mythical bird with the unique ability to separate milk from water and drink only the pure milk. This is the soul’s capacity to discriminate between the real and the unreal, between the eternal Self and the fleeting phenomena of the world.

Within the human brain, Gurunath teaches, the corpus callosum is shaped like a swan in flight — its wing-like lateral ventricles spreading toward the forehead. As the awakened Kundalini rises and the two petals of the Ajna chakra unfold, the yogi begins to experience Hamsa Consciousness — the sense of being “breathed by the Divine In-dweller.” The breath that was once unconscious becomes the vehicle of conscious union with God.

The hamsa soul wins its wings to freedom, taking flight into cosmic consciousness and arriving at the great truth: Tat Tvam Asi — That Thou Art.Yogiraj Gurunath Siddhanath

The Cave of Brahma — The Third Ventricle

As awareness rises further through the sushumna — the astral spine — it reaches the Cave of Brahma, the brain’s third ventricle. Here the individual sense of “I” begins to dissolve. The soul that entered the cave as a limited self emerges as the infinite Self. It is the crucible of transformation, the place where the final vestiges of ego are burned away in the fire of divine awareness.

This is why the Ajna chakra — the third eye — is called the “command centre” of the yogic system. The spiritual eye that opens here — the five-pointed star surrounded by blue and gold — is the first visible sign that the swan has truly taken flight.

The Inner Ascent

The ascent of the hamsa is not a one-time event but a gradual process — the natural result of sustained Kriya practice. With each round of Shiva-Shakti Pranayama, the life-force rises a little higher, the chakras open a little more, and the swan’s wings grow a little stronger. There are stages:

🌱 Awakening

The Kundalini stirs at the base of the spine. The dormant energy begins to move. This is the first stirring of the wings.

🕊️ Flight

The energy rises through the chakras. The yogi experiences Hamsa Consciousness — breathed by the Divine.

☀️ Freedom

Reaching the Cave of Brahma, the soul knows itself as the Infinite. Tat Tvam Asi — That Thou Art.

Tat Tvam Asi — That Thou Art

The final truth the ascending swan arrives at is the oldest and simplest in the world: You are That. The infinite consciousness you have been seeking has been your own true nature all along. The swan was never bound. The wings were never closed. The sky was never out of reach.
