The Yuga Cycle: The Wheel of the Ages
We are used to imagining time as a straight line, marching ever “forward.” The sages of India saw it differently: as a great wheel turning through ages of light and darkness — the yugas. In The Holy Science (1894), Jnanavatar Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri set out a remarkably precise account of this cycle, one that differs sharply from the popular reckoning and casts our own age in a hopeful light.
A Wheel of 24,000 Years
Sri Yukteswar taught that our sun, with all its planets, slowly circles a distant spiritual centre he called Vishnunabhi — the “navel of Vishnu,” the magnetic heart of the universe and the seat of the creative power. One complete revolution takes about 24,000 years. As the sun draws near this centre, a subtle magnetism quickens human consciousness; as it recedes, awareness dims. The whole cycle therefore falls into two halves: 12,000 descending years, in which the world sinks toward materialism and ignorance, and 12,000 ascending years, in which it rises again toward light and spirit.
The Four Ages and Their Lengths
Within each 12,000-year half, the cycle passes through four ages, each shorter and denser than the last on the way down, and lengthening again on the way up. Each includes a transitional dawn-and-dusk period (a sandhi) at its beginning and end:
- Satya Yuga — the golden age of truth: 4,800 years (4,000 + two 400-year transitions).
- Treta Yuga — the silver age: 3,600 years (3,000 + two 300-year transitions).
- Dwapara Yuga — the bronze age of energy: 2,400 years (2,000 + two 200-year transitions).
- Kali Yuga — the dark, iron age: 1,200 years (1,000 + two 100-year transitions).
Together these total 12,000 years — one half of the great cycle.
Descending and Ascending
On the descending arc, as the sun moves away from Vishnunabhi, the ages fall in order — Satya, Treta, Dwapara, Kali — and the light of understanding gradually fades until it reaches its lowest point. Then the motion reverses. On the ascending arc, the same ages return in the opposite order — Kali, Dwapara, Treta, Satya — and consciousness climbs back toward its height. The deepest darkness is therefore also the turning point: the dawn of the long return to light.
Yukteswar’s Correction of the Numbers
Most popular accounts give the yugas enormous lengths — a Kali Yuga of 432,000 years, and a total cycle of millions. Sri Yukteswar held that these vast figures were a mistake. During the depths of the dark age, he explained, scholars lost the key to the calculation and mistook ordinary years for “years of the gods,” multiplying the true numbers many times over. Restoring the original reckoning, he gave the cycle its modest and elegant span of 24,000 years — a figure that corresponds closely to the precession of the equinoxes.
Where We Stand Now
This is the hopeful heart of Sri Yukteswar’s teaching. The descending Kali Yuga reached its lowest point and the ascending Kali Yuga began in 499 AD. Humanity then climbed out of the darkest age and crossed, around 1699 AD, into the ascending Dwapara Yuga — the age of energy — with its full influence settling in by 1899. We are no longer sinking into a long night, as the common belief in a 432,000-year Kali Yuga would suggest; we are rising. The explosion of knowledge about energy, electricity, and the fine forces of nature over the past three centuries is, in this view, exactly what the dawning Dwapara age should bring. The cycle will continue upward into Treta around 4099 AD. (See A Golden Dawn: The Ascending Age of Energy.)
The Four Ages in Depth
Each age has its own character, its own level of human understanding, and its own place on the wheel. Explore each in detail:

- Treta Yuga — The Age of Thought
- Dwapara Yuga — The Age of Energy
- Kali Yuga — The Age of Matter
Why the yugas give cause for hope
Sri Yukteswar’s recalculation of the yugas, given in The Holy Science, carries a quietly hopeful message: we are not sinking into a dark age but rising out of one. By his reckoning humanity entered the ascending Dwapara Yuga — an age of energy and expanding awareness — around 1900, which is why subtle forces, consciousness and the inner sciences are awakening across the world. For the seeker this is encouragement: the very current of the age now supports the soul’s inner ascent. See The Four Ages and Kundalini Kriya Yoga.
