Surya Yoga: The Solar Practice

Pranic healing with solar power — a method of consciously absorbing the Sun’s life-force for healing and spiritual upliftment.

Surya is one of the Sanskrit names for the Sun. Surya Yoga is a solar practice developed by Yogiraj Gurunath Siddhanath — hailed by many as one of the foremost solar masters of our age. It draws on the life-giving energy of the Sun, combined with breathing techniques (pranayama), mantras and mudras, to revitalise, cleanse and protect both the physical and the subtle “etheric” body. Gurunath aptly calls it “Pranic Healing with Solar Power.”

What is Surya Yoga?

The Sun has been revered by sages since the dawn of time as the visible source of life and prana on Earth. Surya Yoga is a method for consciously absorbing that solar life-force and directing it for healing and spiritual upliftment. Practised with devotion, it is said to energise the body, ease emotional suffering, and lift the whole being into greater positivity and well-being.

It is best practised in the gentle hours around sunrise or sunset, when the Sun’s rays are soft and nourishing. It pairs beautifully with the wider practice of Kundalini Kriya Yoga and Gurunath’s mission of Earth Peace through Self Peace.

The Basic and Full Versions

Over the years this practice was evolved by Yogiraj and grew quite full and detailed. For ease of learning it has been divided into two forms — a basic version and a full version. The basic version keeps the essential power and benefits of the practice while taking far less time to learn, which is why Gurunath has made it freely available so anyone can begin.

A Living Solar Tradition

Like the solar sages of old, Gurunath is said to have received the Sun’s healing mantra, Akaal Mrityu — to our knowledge the only spiritually charged solar formula given by a modern solar master — bridging the ages back to the rishis of the Vedas. His own poem, simply titled Surya Yoga, is described as the very source of this teaching: each verse a solar healing meditation in itself, a hymn to the light that fills and heals our being.

Let the Sun In

Surya Yoga is one of the most accessible spiritual practices in the world. It requires no special equipment, no prior experience, and no membership in any group. Only the Sun — which shines freely on all beings — and the willingness to receive its blessing.

As Gurunath teaches, the Sun does not discriminate. Its light falls on saint and sinner alike. Surya Yoga is simply the art of receiving that light consciously, with an open heart.
