The Bondage of the Soul and the Way to Freedom
Why does the soul, in essence ever-free and divine, feel itself bound and suffering? This is the central riddle of the spiritual life, and Sri Yukteswar‘s The Holy Science offers a clear and compassionate answer.
The root: forgetfulness
The soul’s bondage begins not with sin but with forgetfulness — a primal ignorance (avidya) in which pure Spirit identifies itself with the body and mind. From this single mistake flow all the others: “I am this body, this name, these possessions.” The infinite forgets itself and feels small.
The chain of suffering
From forgetfulness arises egoism, and from egoism the restless pull of likes and dislikes — attachment to what pleases and aversion to what pains. These bind the soul ever more tightly to the wheel of desire and disappointment. Patanjali names these the five kleshas, the afflictions that keep us in bondage (see our page on the Yoga Sutras).
The way to freedom
Because bondage begins in forgetting, freedom begins in remembering. The path is to reverse the outward flow of consciousness and turn it inward, until the soul recovers the direct experience of its own divine nature. Sri Yukteswar taught that natural love, right company, self-discipline and meditation gradually loosen the knots, until the heart is purified and the veil of ignorance lifts.
Kriya as the practical key
Kriya Yoga is the practical method for this reversal. By interiorising the life-force through the science of breath, it withdraws consciousness from the body’s restless pull and reveals the calm, ever-free Self within. Freedom is not something to be gained from outside; it is our original nature, recovered the moment forgetfulness ends. Begin with Kriya Basics and the three gunas.
