Aum: The Word, the Light, and the Sound of Creation

Across the scriptures of India, one syllable is revered above all others: Aum (or Om), the Pranava, the primordial sound from which all creation springs. To the Kriya yogi, Aum is not a symbol but an experience — the cosmic vibration that can be directly heard and merged into in deep meditation.

The Word that was in the beginning

The sages taught that creation is a vibration — that the one Spirit, in becoming the many, set the whole universe humming with a single sustaining sound. This is the “Word” of which the scriptures of many traditions speak: “In the beginning was the Word.” In Sanskrit it is Aum, the seed-sound of the cosmos.

The three-and-a-half measures

Aum is written with three sounds — A, U, M — said to represent the threefold activity of creation, preservation and dissolution, presided over by Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Beyond the three sounds lies the silence into which they dissolve: the fourth, soundless state, which is pure Spirit itself.

Hearing the cosmic sound

In Kriya Yoga, Aum is more than a chant. As the mind grows still and the life-force is interiorised, the meditator begins to perceive the actual inner sound of the cosmic vibration — heard within as a great roar, a bell, a flute, or the sound of rushing waters. To merge the attention in this sound is to ride it back toward its source in the Divine. Sri Yukteswar in The Holy Science identifies this Aum-vibration as the first manifestation of the Absolute in creation.

The bridge between matter and Spirit

Aum is therefore the bridge: the doorway through which consciousness, descending, became the world, and through which the yogi, ascending, returns to God. To meditate upon Aum is to lay hold of the very rope by which the soul climbs home. Explore Kriya Basics and the Yoga Sutras, where Patanjali names Aum the symbol of the Lord.
