The Magnetic Heart of the Universe: Vishnunabhi and the Yugas
In The Holy Science, Sri Yukteswar offered a striking explanation for why human consciousness rises and falls across the ages. The cause, he taught, is the movement of our sun around a great spiritual centre he called Vishnunabhi — the “navel of Vishnu,” the magnetic heart of the universe.
The sun’s hidden orbit
Sri Yukteswar taught that our sun, with its planets, is not stationary but circles around a distant grand centre over a vast cycle of roughly 24,000 years. This great seat of creative power radiates a subtle magnetism that influences the awareness of all beings within its reach.
Nearness and awakening
As the sun draws nearer to this magnetic centre during its orbit, the subtle influence intensifies, and human consciousness becomes more refined, more intelligent, more capable of grasping the finer truths of spirit. As the sun moves away, awareness contracts, and the darker, more materialistic ages set in. The rise and fall of civilisations, in this view, follows the rhythm of this cosmic orbit.
The 24,000-year cycle
This single great cycle contains both a descending arc — from the golden age down to the dark age — and an ascending arc back up again. It is this framework that allowed Sri Yukteswar to argue that humanity, having passed the lowest point, is now climbing back toward the light. (Modern astronomy recognises a comparable ~25,800-year cycle in the precession of the equinoxes, which Sri Yukteswar connected to his teaching.)
The inner meaning
For the Kriya yogi, the lesson is profound: consciousness is shaped by subtle, unseen forces, and the same magnetic principle that governs the cosmos operates within the spine, where the awakened life-force rises toward its own centre. The outer orbit mirrors the inner ascent. Read more in A Golden Dawn and The Four Ages.
