Kriya Yoga Teachings

What Is Shaktipat?

In the Kriya tradition, and especially in the teaching of Yogiraj Gurunath, one word appears again and again: Shaktipat — the descent of divine energy from the master to the disciple. It is one of the great mysteries and gifts of the guru-disciple relationship.

The meaning of Shaktipat

The Sanskrit word combines shakti (spiritual energy, the divine power) and pat (to descend, to fall). Shaktipat is the transmission of awakened spiritual force from one in whom it is fully alive into one in whom it still sleeps. By a glance, a touch, a word, or even silent intention, the realised master quickens the dormant energy within the seeker.

Awakening the sleeping power

Within every human being lies a vast reservoir of spiritual energy — in yogic language, the Kundalini — coiled and dormant at the base of the spine. The seeker may work for years to awaken it. Shaktipat is the master’s grace that lights the flame directly, giving the disciple a taste of the awakened state and accelerating the inner journey.

Grace and effort together

Shaktipat is not magic that replaces practice. It is a seed planted; the disciple must still water it through daily meditation and discipline. But it transforms the path — turning abstract teaching into living experience, and giving the seeker faith born of direct contact with the divine current. Grace and self-effort work hand in hand.

Gurunath and the living transmission

Yogiraj Gurunath is known for transmitting this awakening in his satsangs, often together with what he calls Pranapat — the breathing of the guru’s own prana into the disciple. To witness it is to understand that Kriya Yoga is a living, transmitted current, not a dry technique. Learn more in Kriya Basics and watch the New Life Awakening satsang.

Shivapath, Shaktipath and Pranapath

Gurunath speaks of three graces of transmission by which a master quickens the disciple’s evolution. Shaktipath is the descent of shakti, known to masters across the world. Pranapath is the guru breathing his own spiritual prana through the disciple’s breath, into the spinal cord. And Shivapath is subtler still: “if any mind attunes itself to undifferentiated consciousness, that mind shall become that consciousness to the degree of its attunement.” The Satguru, being free from the bonds of karma, can by sheer grace (guru kripa) give the disciple a direct foretaste of samadhi — “come share my samadhi” — a glimpse of the disciple’s own ultimate potential, freely given before it has been earned.

This is the very difference between a teacher and a master: “Gurus inform; masters transform.” And it points to the litmus test of a true Satguru: as you sit in his presence, your mind stills of its own accord, and you feel, more or less according to your receptivity, that you have come home — that the thirst of the ages is quenched. “Test me,” Gurunath says; “challenge me, and if I fail, leave me — but if the stillness comes, stay, and you will progress.”
