Pranapat: The Breath of the Guru
Alongside Shaktipat, Yogiraj Gurunath teaches a second, intimately related grace: Pranapat — the transmission of the guru’s own life-breath, his prana, directly into the disciple.
Prana: the bridge of life
Prana is the subtle life-force that flows on the breath and animates every living thing. In Kriya Yoga, the mastery of prana is the very heart of the practice. Where Shaktipat awakens the dormant spiritual energy, Pranapat is the master breathing his own purified, God-charged life-current into the student — enlivening and guiding the disciple’s prana directly.
A living transmission
Gurunath describes Pranapat as the guru “breathing his breath” into the seeker — a sharing of the master’s own attainment at the level of life-energy itself. It is profoundly experiential: many who receive it report a tangible quickening of energy, deep stillness, or spontaneous absorption in meditation.
From breath to Spirit
This reflects the whole logic of Kriya Yoga, which Gurunath sums up as a ladder: breath becomes prana, prana becomes Kriya, Kriya awakens Kundalini, and Kundalini opens into samadhi. Pranapat is grace entering at the level of the breath — the very rung where the Kriya yogi does his own daily work — and lifting the disciple upward. See From Breath to Bliss.
Grace meeting effort
As with all transmission, Pranapat is a gift that must be received and nurtured through one’s own practice. The master kindles; the disciple must keep the fire burning. Together, the guru’s prana and the seeker’s devotion carry the soul toward union with the Divine. Explore Kriya Basics to understand the science of the breath.
Pranapat — the breath of the guru — is the very transmission a master gives at initiation into Kundalini Kriya Yoga, awakening the disciple’s own inner life-force.
In Gurunath’s own words, Pranapat is the guru “breathing his spiritual prana through your breath, in your spinal cord” — a direct transmission of life-force into the very channel through which the awakened energy rises.
