Yudhishthira— The King of Dharma

Yudhishthira, the eldest of the five Pandava brothers in the Mahabharata, is the embodiment of truth and righteousness — the “Dharmaraja,” whose virtue and whose single failing both shape the destiny of the epic.

Birth and nature

Yudhishthira is the son of Kunti by Dharma (Yama), the god of righteousness and death — and he inherits his father’s nature. Calm, just and devoted to truth, he is said never to have told a deliberate lie until the war forced one half-truth from him. His chariot is fabled to ride slightly above the ground, so pure is he, until that single deception brings it down to earth.

The fatal flaw

Yudhishthira’s one weakness is his love of dice. In the Sabha Parva he is drawn into a rigged game by Shakuni and, unable to stop, gambles away his wealth, his kingdom, his brothers, himself, and finally Draupadi — delivering them all into exile and setting the tragedy in motion.

The wise ruler

Yet his virtue is unshaken. In the forest he answers the riddles of the Yaksha and wins back his brothers’ lives; after the war he is consecrated emperor, performs the great horse sacrifice, and receives from the dying Bhishma a vast teaching on duty and liberation.

The final test

At the epic’s close, Yudhishthira alone walks living to the gate of heaven, refusing to abandon a faithful dog — revealed to be his father Dharma — and choosing to share his loved ones’ suffering rather than enjoy paradise without them. By this compassion he passes the last test of all.

Yudhishthira shows that righteousness is not the absence of flaw but steadfast devotion to truth — and that even the wisest soul must learn humility through its own failings.
