The Five-Fold Path of Kriya Yoga

Five interwoven streams of practice — body, breath, mind, voice, and heart.

Kriya Yoga is not a single technique but a complete system of spiritual development — an integrated approach that works on multiple dimensions of the human being at once. While the core pranayama is often spoken of as “the Kriya technique,” the full path includes five interwoven streams of practice, each supporting the others. Together they form what is known as the Five-Fold Path of Kriya Yoga.

These five are not optional extras. They are the natural limbs of the practice itself — five fingers of one hand — each addressing a different dimension of the journey: the body, the breath, the mind, the voice, and the heart.

The Five Streams

1. Kriya Meditation — The Inner Ascent

The foundational practice: drawing the life-force (prana) upward through the spinal centres using the breath. This is the rhythmic, conscious movement of energy along the astral spine that purifies the chakras, dissolves karma, and gradually awakens the Kundalini. Performed daily, it is the engine that powers the whole journey.

2. Pranayama — The Science of Breath

Beyond the core technique, the path includes supplementary breathing practices that prepare and support it — balancing the lunar and solar energies (ida and pingala), cleansing the channels (nadi shodhana), and deepening the capacity to hold and direct the life-force. The breath is the bridge between the physical and the spiritual.

3. Mantras — The Sacred Sound

Sound is vibration, and vibration is the substance of creation. The path includes the chanting and inner repetition of sacred mantras — above all Aum, the primordial sound from which the universe emanates. When the spiritual eye opens, the yogi hears the cosmic Aum, the unstruck sound underlying all audible sound.

4. Mudras — The Sacred Gestures

Mudras are subtle techniques that seal and direct the flow of energy. In the Kriya system they include the sealing of the spiritual eye in Jyoti Mudra and other internal alignments that prevent the dissipation of prana and concentrate it at the higher centres. These are received from a teacher rather than learned from a page.

5. Devotion — The Opening of the Heart

The fifth stream is perhaps the most important: love and devotion (bhakti) for the Divine and for the guru who channels the grace of the lineage. Without devotion the practice becomes mechanical; with it, every breath becomes a prayer and every Kriya an offering. Gurunath emphasises that devotion is not sentimentality but the natural response of the soul to the presence of the Divine.

Five Streams, One River

These five practices are not performed in isolation but woven into the daily routine of the Kriya practitioner. The meditation and pranayama form the core; the mantras are chanted before and after; the mudras are held during the technique itself; and devotion permeates everything — the motivation that brings one to practice, the attitude maintained throughout, and the gratitude that follows.

The five-fold structure reflects the holistic vision of Kriya Yoga: the human being is not merely a body or a mind but a multi-dimensional reality — physical, energetic, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Each stream nourishes one of these dimensions, ensuring that the transformation is complete and balanced.

The Complete Path

The Five-Fold Path offers something rare: a complete, integrated system tested and refined over thousands of years by an unbroken lineage of realised masters. It requires no belief, no dogma, no external authority — only sincerity, regularity, and the willingness to look within. What is Kriya Yoga? →
