Kali Yuga— The Age of Matter
Kali Yuga is the dark, iron age — the shortest and densest of the four ages in the cycle described by Sri Yukteswar in The Holy Science. It is the low point of the great wheel, when the sun is farthest from the spiritual centre Vishnunabhi and the light of understanding falls to its dimmest. Yet in Sri Yukteswar’s reckoning this darkest age is, for us, already in the past.
Length and Place in the Cycle
Kali Yuga lasts 1,200 years — a core of 1,000 years with two transitional periods (sandhis) of 100 years each. It sits at the very bottom of the cycle, where the descending arc ends and the ascending arc begins. The most recent descending Kali Yuga bottomed out, and the ascending Kali Yuga ran from 499 AD to about 1699 AD, after which humanity climbed up into the present age of energy.
The Consciousness of the Age
By Sri Yukteswar’s measure, the human intellect in Kali Yuga can comprehend only the gross material world — the outermost shell of creation. The subtle energies behind matter, the divine magnetism behind those energies, and the Spirit behind all are hidden from view. It is the age in which spirit is most forgotten and the visible, physical world is taken to be the whole of reality.
Life in the Dark Age
In the tradition the “bull of dharma” stands on a single leg in Kali Yuga: righteousness survives, but only barely. It is pictured as an age of conflict, short lives, lost knowledge, and spiritual confusion — the long night of the soul of the world. Sri Yukteswar noted that it was during these dark centuries that the very key to the yuga calculation was lost, which is how the true 24,000-year cycle came to be mistaken for one of millions of years.
The Turning Point
Crucially, Sri Yukteswar taught that this age is behind us. Humanity passed out of the ascending Kali Yuga around 1699 AD and has been rising ever since. Far from being trapped in a darkness lasting hundreds of thousands of years, we stand on the upward path — the deepest night already giving way to a brightening dawn.
