Treta Yuga— The Age of Thought

Treta Yuga is the second age of the great cycle described by Sri Yukteswar in The Holy Science — the silver age, ranking just below the golden Satya Yuga. It is an age of high mind and spiritual power, when humanity stands close to the summit of the wheel and the influence of the spiritual centre Vishnunabhi is still strong.

Length and Place in the Cycle

Treta Yuga lasts 3,600 years — a core of 3,000 years with two transitional periods (sandhis) of 300 years each. On the descending arc it follows Satya and precedes Dwapara; on the ascending arc it is the age the world climbs into after Dwapara. In the present cycle the ascending Treta Yuga is expected to dawn around 4099 AD, after the current age of energy has run its course.

The Consciousness of the Age

By Sri Yukteswar’s measure, the human intellect in Treta Yuga is able to comprehend the divine magnetism — the subtle source from which all the finer forces and electricities of nature spring. Where the ascending Dwapara age grasps energy itself, the Treta mind perceives the deeper power behind energy: the magnetic thought-force of the universe. It is an age of telepathy, of subtle perception, and of mastery over the unseen currents that move both mind and matter.

Life in the Silver Age

In the tradition the “bull of dharma” stands on three legs in Treta Yuga: righteousness is strong but no longer total. Great sages, kings, and spiritual sciences flourish; ritual, will, and the power of the word carry real force. Human beings live long and nobly, though the perfect spontaneity of the golden age has begun, very gently, to recede.

On the Way Up

Because we live on the ascending arc, Treta is part of humanity’s future rather than only its past. As the world rises out of the age of energy into the age of divine mind, the powers that once seemed miraculous — thought reaching across distance, mind shaping matter — will become, in Sri Yukteswar’s vision, the natural inheritance of the age.
